1 Year Old Always Seems to Be Sick

I have a 12 month old little girl that every time we get over one sickness she picks up another one. THe first six months of her life she was never sick but the last 6 months have been a different story. She has had 2 stomach viruses, RSV, 2 other viruses that caused high fever, etc. Is this normal? SHe is not in day care and I am still nursing her. The doctor does not seem concerned and just says some babies are sicker, but it just seems weird. Any of you have this same problem?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THanks to everyone for all the responses. It makes me feel a lot better to hear that other people have sick kids too and eventually she will stop getting sick so much. Thanks again!!

Hey A.,

This will sound odd but I actually appreciate it when my kids come down with something mild. I look at it as a way for their immune systems to learn how to function. I let them run fevers, and I have never given them antibiotics for anything. (Although, just to clarify, we haven't necessarily needed antibiotics as we haven't come down with like... the plague or anything sooo...)

Kids pretty much run fevers and come down with stuff for the first 3-4 years of life. If her doctor isn't too worried, then I wouldn't be either. Although it is definitely difficult when they are sick... its best to let their bodies try to handle it on their own for the first few days (as long as symptoms aren't too bad and as long as fever isnt too high)....

She'll have an immune system of steel by the time she goes to Kindergarten! Hang in there!

Hi A.. I'm sorry to hear about your little one. Our son will be 6 months old the 29th. Since Christmas, he has had the same illnesses (except RSV). He is in Day Care. I have friends whose children are NOT in day care either and they are having the same viruses. Our Dr's do not seem concerned, but it's starting to scare me to death (he weighs 12 lbs!!). I've even thought about changing Dr's or demanding something else be done. All I know for sure is that these viruses seem to be EVERYWHERE and everyone is getting them. That's what I plan on doing at the 6 mth check up.

I nursed my two boys and they both had chronic ear infections. I joked that they did not get the memo about nursing babies being healthier. Years later, I discovered an amazing company that found a way to put fruits and veggies into capsules or gummy treats. I wish I had known about it back then!

Now, the more I learn about nutrition, I realize that since I was not practicing dietary excellence, how could I produce the highest possible quality milk for my babies? I'm sure it was still better than formula, but still...imagine if it was fortified with all the nutrition of 5 fruits, 8 vegetables and 2 whole grains every single day? And imagine getting all that in just 4 little capsules or 8 gummy treats!

I am now such a firm believer in this product that I decided to market it so I could make it available to other moms like me. Email me if you'd like some info on this natural way to improve your family's immune system.

Blessings,

M.
P.S. We only visit the doctor for yearly well checks now. Finally.

Babies do get sick, but it sounds like her immune system is low. There are things that you can do to help her build her immunity. If you would like to know more you can email me. I have been successful in limiting the number of ear infections my son was getting through natural supplements.

Kids do pick-up a lot of stuff even if they are not in daycare. Even you going to the store without them can bring something home to them. But all my kids had issues getting tons of colds last year & heading to the ER for breathing issues - this year we did better, but they were on Zyrtec all winter for allergies. Allergies run in both side of our families... and it looks like in our kids as well. We actually managed not to have to go the the ER for breathing treatments all winter :), but now that spring is here we will see if that good luck continues. My 6 yr old was tested after 3 hospital stays for breathing issues & always being sick... she does have allergies, but will need retested when she get a little older. My 2 1/2 yr old was put on Zyrtec after 3 ER visits for breathing issues & multiple colds, when he did much better they tried my 4 1/2 yr old on it after suffering from colds all the time... 2 are in school & even w/ that we have done a lot better w/ the help of the Zytec & gummy vitamines. When I do notice the kids are getting sick - I give the the immunity vitamine everyday instead of everyother. Most of the time I switch them back & forth - regual mulit and immunity, but I only give them one per day, not the 2 like the bottle says. I use the vit more for extra cause they do eat really well & we do eat pretty balanced meals.... but they do have bad eating days - so the vit help them out there.

Good luck & I hope your daughter get to feeling better soon!

My son was this way, getting sick almost every week. I kept thinking there was something wrong, or some other health problem.
I think maybe it was untreated allergies that made him more vulnerable, plus he had a hole in his heart. After his surgery at age 4, he seemed to get sick less often. I've also heard that getting lots of viruses when younger can build up a child's immune system for when he goes to school.
Now my son is 8, and doesn't get sick that often, and when he does it's less severe. This week he had a cold but didn't even have to miss school.

My son is the same way --- we haven't had a real break since September of last year --- it's still going: RSV, Ear Infections, Stomach viruses, etc. In I've picked up about 80% of what he's had too.

I hear it does go away when they are older - once their immune systems are a little more capable of dealing with the germs ... I hope it's true ...

I don't know if anyone has said this or not but you might think about taking her to an allergist. I know that sounds crazy. However, I went to Southwest Allergy and Asthma Center and had both of my kids tested along with myself. My son who is constantly sick (he has asthma and eczema bad) was tested and the results helped us with knowing what can trigger certain reactions. For example, when he was younger anything with soy, eggs, or even apples upset his stomach and his eczema would flare up. I found out that I didn't really have any allergies. However, I was constantly getting sick so the doctor sent me in for some blood work. He requested a full immunoglobin workup and found out that even though my overall numbers were great, my IGG (immunoglobin G) level was low. One of the others was high so it made my overall number within the normal limits. He put me on Bactrim DS which helps to boost the immune system and gave me a shot. It sounds like she may just have a low immune system. Just a thought.

My child was like that for about 7 months of his infancy. Turns out mold in the apartment we lived in was the culprit. It wasn't in our apartment, but throughout the building. The same week we moved away, his health improved dramatically. Not sure if you have a mold problem anywhere, but even if you cannot see it, it does damage!

the first 2 years of life seem to be fraught with illness. After that, it does seem to slow down. As for not being in daycare, that doesn't make much difference........as long as you are leaving the house & she is too.....she will pick up germs from everywhere. The reverse would be if she stays at home forever, she'll be sick too! Just take a deep breath & try to ride it out. There's lots of bugs out there....& that's a part of Life on Earth.

Multiple colds and flus for someone so young are not uncommon. It's just part of the building up the immunity thing. If daughter is drinking milk or a milk or soy-based formula you may want to try having her go dairy and soy-free for a couple of weeks to see if that helps clear up her recurring congestion and makes her feel better. A lot of kids (and adults) have allergies or food intollerances to cow's milk. Rice milk, almond milk and hemp milk are good dairy-free alternatives.

Hope your daughter is feeling better soon.
