The 1st Birthday is really more for the adults than it is for the birthday boy or girl.
We have all of our kids birthday parties at our house. I never really plan any entertainment. The kids all just play and the adults sit around and chat. I always serve lunch, then we do presents, then the cake.
I think for my daughter's 1st we might have done the cake then the presents, but I'm not for sure on that one.
For the 1st Birthday you'll want a smash caked for the birthday kid. They get to just tear into it with their hands. You can get the really small cakes from the bakery, just tell them you want a small smash cake and they'll know what you want. Make sure to strip your little one down to their diaper for that part! And get the camera ready! :)
I've never done party favors for anyone. Most of the time party favors are just junk anyway. We've received a number of party favor bags and the toys go straight in the trash when we get home. If you do decide that you want party favors, do things that kids will use. Stickers, bubbles, pencils, small activity or coloring books are all good ideas.
As far as the food, it depends on what time you have the party. Like I said, I usually do a lunch. I've had a few different things.
I've done sandwiches. I buy lots of lunch meat and put it on trays. I usually make up a few cheese and veggie trays as well. If I do sandwiches, I almost always to do chips with different warm dips (buffalo chicken, spinach artichoke) and some salsa.
Last time I had a party, I ordered a bunch of pizzas. It was about the same price as the other stuff and a LOT less work for me! :)
My youngest daughter has a July birthday so we will have a cook out. We'll have hot dogs, burgers, brats, potato salad, pasta salad and chips.

If you want to just have cake and ice cream, plan the party for around 2:00 and make sure you put on the invite "Join us for cake and ice cream!" I would still offer a few munchies though.

Have fun! :)

i have not done party favors yet. I dont think those need to be done till the kid is older. We have a 3yo son and daughter will be 1 next week. for her birthday we are having it at 3 so its after naptime. eating by 4, then presents and cake and icecream so people can leave. we will have the wii set up and have room for the kids to play downstairs. most people coming will know eachother so everyone just chats, and eats and thats about it. I think party favors and games come with kids parties as they get older. People dont expect to stay long so just keep it simple and have fun!!

it is really just for the adults! lol the baby has no clue what's happeneng, but it's still fun!! haha!

We had food at both of our kids 1st parties, but i did really simple things like veggie trays, salads and for the main dish for one party i made sloppy joes in a crock pot and the other party i did BBQ chip chop ham in the crock pot...simple! you dont want to spend the whole time in the kitchen. just remember to have fun & take lots of pics!

Make it easy on yourself, its more for the adults then the baby. I would have veggie trays, and a big hit for me is when I make turkey rolls. Super easy to make and really good.

Just need:
Tortilla shells
Softened cream cheese
Lunch meat
Lettuce
Shredded cheese

Take a tortilla shell, and spread your cream cheese over it, then add the meat, lettuce, and cheese, then roll it up and cut into 1/2 inch slices. Put on a tray and serve. People love them.

Hope that you have a great party!

How many people are you inviting? We always limited 1st birthdays to close family only. We basically just did cake -that's usually the first time the baby gets a taste of cake so we take lots of pics! Just pray that you have a nice day and perhaps you can do most of the entertaining outside. If you are having small kids attend, keep the food simple, hot dogs, pizza - it's easy and everyone likes it. As far as party favors, instead of candy and small things (choking hazards) why not buy some stickers, coloring books and crayons at the dollar store? Have fun!
