My 1-month-old has a cold. Do you have any tricks for what I can do to make him feel better? We've got the heat up, humidifiers going, fans on, the bulb serringe (sp?), and I'm giving him a warm bath and having him sleep on an incline. Is there anything else I can do? Do these colds last long with babies or does their young immune system kick them off pretty quickly? I'm nursing him, btw, if that makes any difference. Should I be drinking more fluids or something? Will it make any difference?

What can I do next?

Poor little guy. Besides saline drops in the nose, you can also try breastmilk in the nose. I have heard it helps to clear up the cold, as well. I think everything you are doing is right. You just have to wait it out. Oh, you can also try putting the baby vicks vapor rub on your breast right at his nose level. Then, he will breathe in the vapors while nursing.

Sounds like you are doing everything right. It stinks doesn't it? You just want to take it away from them! Just remember, it's good for their immune systems to fight it off. They are alot tougher than we think & they don't feel as icky as we do when we have colds. The only thing I would suggest is keeping that humidifier around them as much as possible. And the saline drops for sure!
Other than that, just wait.

My 8 week old also had a cold recently. I think you are doing all you can. I can also recommend using saline nasal spray. I use Little Noses. Make sure you get the un-medicated kind. I just sprayed it in his nose 2-3 times then let it sit. After about 10 minutes I would use the syringe and really clear out his nasal passage so the poor thing could breath. His cold lasted about 1 1/2 weeks. Good luck!!

Sorry to hear that your little guy is sick! It is the most helpless feeling as a Mom!

Sounds like you are doing everything you should be. THe only thing I have a little concern over is that you turned up your heat. I learned the hard way YEARS ago with my now 19 year old that the heat turned up and wrapping him in blankets and having him in warm jammies was the worst thing I could have done for him.We ended up in the ER with a 105 fever. But, I figured he was cold since he was sick so turned up the heat and when he was sleeping I put him in warmer jammies and blankets. By doing this I was making him warmer and his fever increased since the body heat was not able to escape as it should. From that point on I actually turned down the heat when anyone is sick in our house and only if I see shivering do I turn it up. Make sure that you are comfortable and as long as you are then so will your son be!

One other thing I would like to suggest is that if your son is not feeding as often make sure that you are pumping to keep up your supply! Also, congrats on making the decision to BF... I think that is great of you!

Hope he feels better soon! Many blessings to you both!
